Danbury, Connecticut - Home cooking has worked well for the Whalers all season long. The recipe for this win included 1 1/3 hat full's of Kirschner, season well with Seifert, add some Moucha. And pepper the opposing goalie often.
In this 6-4 baking of the Barons, Alec Kirschner scored four times, bringing his ten game totals to 16 goals. Chris Seifert with a goal and three assists extended his scoring and point streaks. Marty Moucha added two assists as the Whalers put 55 shots on goal. Danbury is now 20-5-5 on the season and 17-3-1 at the Ice Arena.
There was a lot of trading going on in the first period of play, but it wasn't players. And it wasn't punches. It was goals. Cape Cod starting the scoring when former Whaler defenseman Alex Hager centered a pass to winger Aaron Boyer, who lifted the puck high over Nick Niedert at 1:34 on the Baron's first shot of the game. Danbury came right back at 5:48 when Alec "Kid" Kirschner, toying with the puck out front found Chris Seifert coming in from the left corner to surprise Cape Cod goalie Peter Skogaard for the tying goal. At the halfway mark of the period Baron Boyer was the recipient of another picture perfect centering pass to beat Niedert. At 15:22 it was the Whalers turn again as the "Kid" intercepted a Cape Cod defenseman pass at beat Skogaard high into the net. With 44 seconds to go in the period, Cape Cod broke the tie, this time Leland Fidler besting a screened out Niedert for the 3-2 lead going into the locker room.
The second stanza belonged to the Whalers. At just 2:15 Skogaard found himself trying to defend against three Whalers and a loose puck. Kid Kirschner won the battle, evening the score at 3-3 all. At 10:40 Danbury took its first lead of the night when the "Kid" scored on a faceoff from the right circle for his second hat trick of the season and a 4-3 Whaler advantage.
Danbury poured it on in the third with Kirschner getting his fourth goal of the night at 3:27 and Sean O'Malley at 13:54 stealing a puck at center ice and rushing in all alone to beat Skogaard for a shorthanded goal and a 6-3 lead. A late Cape Cod shorthanded goal tightened the final score to 6-4 with 27 seconds remaining.
Tale of the Whale: Homestand -The Whalers longest homestand of the season continues with a weekend series with the New York Aviators Saturday and Sunday, February 12-13. The Following weekend, February 18-19-20, the Whalers host Cape Cod, Akwesasne and New York; and Cape Cod is here again on Friday, February 25th to close out the homestand. Next Road Trip - Danbury closes out the month with its only road games of February, playing at 1000 Islands and Akwesasne on the 26th and 27th. Transaction: Former UConn Husky hockey standout left winger Chris Myhro was in uniform #19, appearing in his first game for the Whalers. Who's Hot - Chris Seifert has now scored in a league high seven straight games (10 goals) and keeps his point streak alive with 34 points in 14 consecutive games. In his 16 home games Seifert has compiled an impressive 35 points on 20 goals and 15 assists. "Kid" Kirschner is red hot with 16 goals and 14 assists in his nine games wearing the Whalers green and white! Between the pipes, Nick Niedert leads all Federal Hockey League goalies with 1895:28 minutes played, two shutouts and 989 saves. Hot Ticket - The best fans in the Federal Hockey League come to the Danbury Ice Arena as evidenced by the Whalers impressive home attendance total of 35,825 in 21 games, an average of 1,706 per game, out drawing the rest of the league by more than a 1,000 fans per game.
