Danbury Westerners News Release
The Danbury Westerners are a 501(c)3 non profit run entirely by volunteers. Our mission is to bring college summer baseball to the Danbury area for the entertainment of fans of all ages.
Five Westerners Begin Pro Career In Independent Leagues In 2022
2018 Westerner Nico Popa made his professional baseball debut with the Grand Junction (CO) Rockies of the Pioneer League. Nico appeared in 93 of the Rockies 95 regular season games. His .404 batting average was good for 2nd in the league. He led the league in hits (159), was 3rd in stolen bases (33), 5th in runs scored (88) and 7th in RBIs (85). His on base percentage of .449 was good for 4th in the league.
After finishing his final college season, 2019 and 2021 Westerner Christian Allegretti signed with les Aigles de Trois-Rivieres (QC) of the Frontier League and made his professional debut on June 15th. In 31 relief appearances totaling 39.1 innings he compiled a 6.64 ERA and a WHIP of 1.831. He was the winning pitcher in 3 games while being charged with 2 loses. He also picked up 2 saves.
2019 Westerner and Danbury native Jay Alvarez played his first professional season with the Lake Erie (Avon, OH) Crushers of the Frontier League. He pitched 95.1 innings over 21 games including 17 starts. He won 5 and lost 5 with a 5.57 ERA and a 1.584 WHIP. On three occasions Jay started and went 6 innings without allowing a run. His 117 strikeouts was 7th most in the league.
2019 Westerner Lyndon Weaver finished up his college career and spent six weeks in the MLB Draft League before beginning his pro career. On August 15th he signed with the Florence (KY) Y'alls of the Frontier League. His season ended after 9 games when he was placed on the 60 day Injured List. Lyndon had 25 plate appearances, batting .182 with 1 home run, 3 RBIs, 3 runs scored and 2 stolen bases.
2018 Westerner Matt McDermott finished his college career and signed with the Lake Erie Crushers on July 29th. He was released on August 15th after batting .171 in 11 games with 1 triple and 2 stolen bases.
Is This The Year A Westerner Plays In The World Series?
2022 will be the fifth consecutive year and the eighth year overall that a Westerner has reached the MLB Postseason. But to date no Westerner has been able to get past the League Championship Series.
This year hope rests on the shoulders of 2004 Westerner Adam Ottavino of the Mets (pictured above). Ottavino has appeared in seven postseason series with the Rockies, Yankees and Red Sox. He reached the League Championship Series with the Yankees in 2019 and the Red Sox in 2021 but both those teams came up short.
