Danbury Westerners Add Vcu Trio

Danbury, CT- March 26, 2013: The Danbury Westerners, the longest tenured team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, are proud to announce the signing of Virginia Commonwealth University's Tyler Buckley, Vimael Machin, and Nick Octavi.

Tyler Buckley (Scranton, PA) is in his first season as a pitcher for VCU after transferring from Lackawanna JC, where he helped lead his team to two Region XIX Championships, highlighted by a trip to the JUCO World Series in 2012. Tyler was named to the All-American Third Team last season for Lackawanna. Tyler has pitched in five total games for the Rams so far, starting four games. Tyler's record stands at 2-1 with a 3.74 ERA. Tyler is the son of Tim and Rose Buckley and is majoring in homeland security.

Vimael Machin (San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico) is in his sophomore season at VCU, where he plays multiple infield positions. Vimael has started every game since he was a freshman, starting in all 59 games last year and all 21 so far in 2013. This season to date, Vimael has hit two home runs, driven in 15 runs, and scored10 runs. Vimael was named to the CAA Rookie Team during the 2012 campaign. Vimael is a slick fielder as well, with a .989 fielding percentage this season.

Nick Octavi (Port St. Lucie, FL) plays catcher for the Rams. Nick is in his first season at VCU after transferring from Harford Community College in Maryland, where he helped Harford win a Conference Championship. He was named to the All-Region team both years at Harford, as well as winning back to back gold gloves. Nick's prowess behind the plate helped him get named the Region XX Defensive Player of the Year in 2012. Nick is batting .250 in limited action so far this season for VCU. Nick is the son of Daniel and Lynda Octavi and is majoring in criminal justice and department of homeland security.

In addition the Danbury Westerners have announced that their annual Celebrity Breakfast to introduce the 2013 Westerners to the community will be held on Friday June 7th at 7:30AM at the Amber Room in Danbury. Former New York Met pitcher and current broadcaster Ron Darling is the keynote speaker. Reservations are required. The Danbury Westerners 9th annual Celebrity Golf Tournament will be held on Wednesday, July 17th at Richter Park, Danbury CT. Former professional athletes tentatively scheduled to appear include New York Yankee World Series Champion Tommy John and New York Giants Super Bowl Champion Jeff Feagles.
