Crystal Palace Baltimore News Release
August 6th 2008 - Baltimore, MD - Two early goals by the Bermuda Hogges set the stage for a surprise 3-1 win over playoff-bound Crystal Palace FC USA at UMBC Stadium tonight. Larry Mark scored his third goal in two games in Palace's vain attempt at a comeback, but the visitors bore little resemblance to the side that succumbed 3-0 to Palace at Poly/Western High School on Sunday.
Jared Peniston got things started for Bermuda in the ninth minute, finishing well ten yards out off a lovely through ball by Sammy DeGraff. Eight minutes later, Palace looked shellshocked when Damon Ming took full advantage of confusion among the Palace back line to double Bermuda's advantage.
But Palace weren't throwing in the towel. The following minute, Val Teixeira's hard, low cross found Larry Mark in full stride and he buried it for his third goal against Bermuda in the space of four days. Both sides had their chances as the half continued, but the score remained 2-1 going into the break.
Bermuda had the perfect start to the second half when Damon Ming scored his second of the night after a neat one-two with Sammy DeGraff. Though Palace were creating chances, a triple substitution in the 62nd minute added a much-needed spark. One of those substitutes, Gary Brooks, terrorized the Bermuda defense, sometimes even dropping deep to start the attack from midfield. But when the opportunities fell his way, he couldn't find the finishing touch, missing twice by a matter of a foot or less and once thanks to the excellent goalkeeping of Tim Figuerido in the Hogges net. And Brooks wasn't alone - Matthew Mbuta seemed certain to score when he broke through one-on-one with the keeper, but the ball rolled inches wide. Kevin King was lively too, but he fired wide on his two best opportunities.
Palace close out their regular season on Saturday as they visit second-placed Richmond. Palace's first round playoff match follows on Wednesday August 13th against an opponent yet to be determined.
