Dallas Renegades Game Notes - Week 3 at Seattle

February 18, 2020 - XFL (XFL)
Dallas Renegades News Release

SERIES NOTES: This is the first meeting between the Renegades and Dragons. The contest will be the first of two 2020 meetings between the squads, with Seattle traveling to Texas on March 29. Bob Stoops and Jim Zorn have never faced each other at any level of coaching.

SUCCESS IN THE GREAT NORTHWEST

Head coach Bob Stoops will be coaching in the state of Washington for the first time since 2008, but is no stranger to success when facing teams from the Evergreen State as a coach.

- He won his only game in the state, a 55-14 Oklahoma win at Washington in 2008.

- Stoops is 3-0 all-time as a head coach versus teams from the state. In addition to the victory above, he topped UW in Norman (37-20) in 2006. His OU squad also defeated Washington State, 34-14, in the Rose Bowl on January 1, 2003.

- His teams are averaging 42.0 points in three contests against foes from Washington.

- Stoops was a safety on the Iowa team that fell to Washington in the 1982 Rose Bowl (28-0).

WINNING RECORDS ARE THE NORM

The victory at Los Angeles evened the Dallas Renegades record at 1-1. In 18 previous seasons as head coach, Bob Stoops has started 1-1 in just three campaigns. A loss in two of his first three games is even more rare. It has happened only twice - in 2005 and 2016.

MORE THAN CAPABLE KICKING

The Renegades scored their first touchdown in team history when Cameron Artis-Payne broke a 21-yard run in the fourth quarter at Los Angeles. But they had 15 points before then - all courtesy of one player on their roster - Austin MacGinnis. A few notes about the Dallas kicking success:

- Austin MacGinnis is 5-for-5 on field goals so far this season, connecting from 32, 42, 23, 41 and 45 yards. He boasts a strong leg - having made kicks from beyond 50 yards in practice. He once made a school-record 11 straight fields while at the University of Kentucky.

- MacGinnis is tied for the XFL lead with five field goals made. Only one other kicker (Ty Rausa, DC Defenders, 5) has more than two.

- The Renegades' impressive kicking exploits aren't limited to field goals. Punter Drew Galitz has recorded 45.3 yards per punt in two games - the second-best average in the XFL.

- Galitz has punted six times - with four downed inside the 20-yard line. All but one punt has been at least 43 yards.

LANDRY RETURNS AND HITS A HIGH

After missing the season-opener due to injury, Landry Jones returned as the starting quarterback and promptly set a professional career high. He finished with 305 yards (28-of-40) through the air. The mark topped his previous best of 281 yards (29-of-47), set versus the New England Patriots on October 23, 2016. Jones had 27 games with 300 or more yards passing during his career at the University of Oklahoma.

START SPREADIN' THE BALL

The Dallas Renegades entered the season expecting to pass the ball - as any team would with Hal Mumme and his "Air Raid" offensive schemes leading the way. Through two games, Dallas has had at least seven players with multiple receptions in each contest and 15 total multi-catch receivers overall. The combined total leads the XFL.

STAT-SHEET STUFFERS

The Dallas Renegades stand out across the stats lines around the XFL:

- The Renegades have combined for 524 passing yards so far this season, leading the XFL in passing yardage.

- Donald Parham had 76 receiving yards at Los Angeles, the most in any contest by a tight end in a XFL game this season.

- Cameron Artis-Payne has 105 rushing yards in 2020, fifth among all XFL players. He is tied for the XFL lead with two rushing TDs.

- Despite playing in just one game, Landry Jones is fifth in the XFL in passing yards (305). He is the first player in the XFL to throw for 300 yards or more in a game.

- The Renegades lead the XFL in average yards rushing, posting 5.9 yards per carry. The mark is more than 1.0 yards per game better than the next closest team (Tampa Bay, 4.7 ypc).

WE HAIL FROM ALMOST EVERY STATE

The Renegades boast a diverse roster, with players coming from all over the United States. Members of the current squad played college football at 44 different institutions. The only schools with multiple alumni on our roster are Oklahoma (3), Western Michigan (3), Auburn (2), Fresno State (2), Northwestern State (2) and USF (2).
