Dakota guard fills Kobe Bryant's Spot

Boise, ID (February 2, 2004) — Dakota Wizards guard Maurice Carter received a call-up to the Los Angeles Lakers, it was announced over the weekend by the Continental Basketball Association League Office and the Lakers front office. The CBA-to-NBA call-up is the eighth overall league call-up, and the fourth call-up of a player from the Wizards (Sean Lampley, Oliver Miller, Kaniel Dickens), since the 2003-04 season began on November 14.

In 14 games played with the Wizards this season, Carter averaged 23.4 points and 4.4 rebounds per game. He was traded to Dakota from the Gary Steelheads on December 12, after posting 15.4 points and 3.1 rebounds per contest in 14 games played for Gary.

The Louisiana State alum also posted 10 points, three rebounds and one assist in the 20th CBA All-Star Classic on January 20 in Yakima, WA, as a reserve guard for the National Team, who beat the American squad 105-103. On Tuesday, January 27, Carter scored a CBA league-high 44 points on 15 of 22 shooting (68 percent) from the floor, in a 123-106 victory over the Idaho Stampede.

Carter, who is filling Kobe Bryant's roster spot on the Lakers while he is on the Injured List, joins forward Sean Lampley, center Oliver Miller, and forward Kaniel Dickens as Dakota Wizards players who have received call-ups to the NBA this season.
