Hickory Crawdads News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The Hickory Crawdads stayed alive in the Northern Division Championship Series with a 2-1 win in 10 innings against the Lakewood BlueClaws, before 7,335 fans at FirstEnergy Park on Friday night. The third and final game of the series will be in Lakewood on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. to decide who will face the Greenville Drive in the SAL Finals.
The Crawdads (1-1) struck first in the top of the first, after LF Travis Adair worked a lead-off walk, took second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by SS Leury Garcia. RF Jared Prince then brought Adair in with an RBI grounder to first base, putting Hickory in front, 1-0.
Lakewood (1-1) responded right away in the bottom of the first to tie it at 1-1. The BlueClaws loaded the bases with one out and scored their run on a fielder's choice by LF Leandro Castro. LHP Robbie Erlin got out of the rest of the inning unscathed and, after issuing a lead-off walk to start the second inning, retired the final 12 batters he faced in order, including striking out the last five.
LHP Miguel De Los Santos took over and struck out the side in the sixth and seventh, going 3.2 total innings and racking up eight strikeouts while keeping it tied, 1-1. He gave way to LHP Joseph Ortiz (1-0) with runners at second and third and two out in the bottom of the ninth. Ortiz struck out the final batter in that frame to force extra innings.
Hickory got back in front with the eventual game-winning run in the top of the 10th. SS Leury Garcia placed a hit to right-center and stretched it to a double with his speed. He then moved to third on an infield single by Prince, before C Zach Zaneski bounced an RBI fielder's choice to short to score Garcia and put Hickory in front.
After Ortiz, struck out the first batter in the bottom of the 10th, 2B Keoni Ruth doubled and 1B Jonathan Singleton walked to put runners at first and second. However, Ortiz induced a game-ending double play to third base off the bat of C Sebastian Valle, wrapping up the 2-1 win for the Crawdads in extra frames.
Ortiz registered the win for the Crawdads while RHP Mike McGuire (0-1) was tagged with the loss for Lakewood.
