D.C. Sports Franchises Raise Over $35,000 for Hurricane Katrina Relief

Washington, D.C. - More than 50 players and alumni from the Capitals, D.C. United, Mystics, Nationals, Redskins and Wizards today raised over $35,000 to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina in a special "Drive-Thru" donation program in conjunction with The American Red Cross.

Personnel from the teams were on hand from 7:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. in RFK Stadium Parking Lot 8 to personally accept monetary donations from the many motorists and pedestrians who showed up to demonstrate their support by making contributions.

"This drive demonstrates the character of the D.C. sports community," stated Linda Mathes, CEO, American Red Cross National Capital Area Chapter. "The players were so moved by the disaster that they felt they personally wanted to make a difference. We can't thank them enough."
