San Jose CyberRays News Release
SAN JOSE (May 17, 2003) â Rookie defender Melinda Carter has been waived by the San Jose CyberRays, who immediately claimed Atlanta Beat midfielder Katie Antongiovanni.
Carter, 24, from Plano, Texas and the University of South Carolina, was invited to the CyberRays preseason tryout camp and made the team's reserve roster at the beginning of the season. Her only appearance for the CyberRays was April 27 against the San Diego Spirit when she was subbed in for the final minute of play.
Antongiovanni, 22, of Bakersfield and the University of Denver, was Atlanta's third-round pick in the WUSA Draft in February and played nine minutes of Atlanta's April 5 game against the New York Power. She became eligible to be claimed by the CyberRays when she was moved from Atlanta's reserve roster to its developmental roster Thursday.
Antongiovanni led Denver in goals (14) and points (32) in 2002. Her 14 goals put her fourth on the Denver's all-time goals list, and her 32 points tied her for second in all-time points. She played her first two college seasons at Iowa State, where she was Big 12 rookie of the year in 1999.
