SAN JOSE (March 8, 2003) – Katia, who set a WUSA single-season record of 15 goals a year ago, and her Brazilian teammate Pretinha each scored a pair of goals Saturday in the San Jose CyberRays' 5-0 preseason scrimmage victory over Cal.

The scrimmage, played in three 30-minute periods, was the first of two preseason games the CyberRays will play before opening their third WUSA season April 5 against the Philadelphia Charge at Spartan Stadium.

``The Brazilians did a great job,'' CyberRays coach Ian Sawyers said of his threesome of Katia, Sissi and Pretinha. ``It was also good to see Mandy Clemens and Keri Sanchez fitting in with a new group.''

Clemens, a forward, and Sanchez, a midfielder-defender, are veteran WUSA players the CyberRays picked up in off-season trades. Clemens assisted on Katia's goal in the fifth minute.

Sawyers got all four goalkeepers into the match – LaKeysia Beene, Dawn Greathouse and tryout player Julie Podhrasky and draftee Sarah Peters – and got 90 minutes from No.1 draft pick Betsy Barr in midfield and tryout players Ann Cook, a midfielder, and Melinda Carter, a defender. Kim Clark and Megan Horvath returned from off-season surgeries to play 30 minutes each at forward. Horvath assisted on Lisa Nañez's goal in the 65th minute.

``The first game is always about looking to see where you're at, and our players have come in and fit together well,'' Sawyers said. ``We've got a huge competition for all positions.''
