Forest City Owls News Release
Asheboro, NC- Nate Cudney carried a no-hitter into the 5th inning in his first start, leading the Forest City Owls to a 2-1 win over the Asheboro Copperheads on Sunday night. Cudney faced the minimum in three of his first four innings, allowing just one baserunner. He also escaped some trouble late in the outing to keep the Copperheads off the scoreboard. Champ Rowland and Jason Driver combined for the final three innings. Driver came on with two aboard in the 9th inning and walked pinch-hitter Luke Tendler. After a strikeout, Driver coaxed a fielder's choice, double play from Lucas Witt, scoring the only Asheboro run, but also ending the game.
Forest City broke up the early pitcher's duel in the 5th inning. Will Chandler floated a broken-bat single to right field. Chandler then picked up his first steal of the season and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Stephen Tarkenton followed with a double down the right field line to give the Owls a 1-0 lead. Tarkenton would advance to third on a ground out and scored the game's second run on a bunt single by Kurt Seiders.
Asheboro had a couple of chances to score later in Cudney's outing. In the 5th inning, the Copperheads loaded the bases on two hits and an error with one out. Ford Wilson grounded into a fielder's choice with the runner forced out at home, and Lucas Witt flied out to end the threat. Asheboro loaded them up again in the 6th inning with two outs, but Cudney turned them away once again.
Zach Parks went eight innings to start for Asheboro, allowing both Forest City runs on just six hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. Bryan Aanderud had his 14-game hitting streak snapped with an 0-for-4 outing.
