Jacksonville Barracudas News Release
The Jacksonville Barracudas (22-17) played three games in three days over the weekend. After defeating the Macon Trax in Macon on Thursday night by a score of 5-3, the Barracudas traveled to Knoxville to take on the first place Ice Bears. In a battle of the best home record vs. the best road record, the Cudas got two goals from Chris Ferguson, two assists from Jason Silverthorn and 45 saves from goaltender Randy Hevey for a 5-4 victory. The win was the fifth in a row for Jacksonville as well as the first time that they have defeated Knoxville in four tries. The Cudas were also a stellar 2-for-2 on the power play.
In Huntsville on Saturday, the Cudas came within 1:15 from earning their sixth in a row when the Huntsville Havoc pulled their goalie in favor of an extra attacker late in the third period and James Patterson put one by Cuda goalie Tyler Nilsson to send the game into overtime. After a scoreless extra 5 minutes, Jeff Dams of Huntsville sealed a 3-2 victory by notching the deciding goal in a shootout. For Jacksonville, Captain Brad Federenko scored a goal and added an assist while Colin Kendall also tallied a goal. Jacksonville was 0-for-3 on the powerplay.
Of the weekend, Assistant Coach Brett Strot said, "I am really pleased with the way that our guys battled all week. We showed a lot of positives, played tougher and are really progressing as a team."
The weekend also premiered yet another new name on the Barracuda roster. Said Strot, "We still needed another defenseman on the roster and Aaron was available." Aaron, meaning Aaron Wilson, who is in his first year as a pro and was playing with the Motor City Mechanics of the United Hockey League before they added NHL stars Derian Hatcher, Chris Chelios and Kris Draper. "Aaron is a big kid," said Strot, "he sees the ice well, closes the gaps, and showed that he really wants to play this weekend." In fact, Wilson drove nine hours from Detroit to Knoxville, put on his pads and played Friday night. "He will fit into our system well," added Strot.
Next up: The Cudas host Knoxville @ 7:35 on Friday and Winston-Salem @ 7:05 on Saturday at the Fish Tank. Friday is Military Appreciation Night. Anyone with a valid military I.D. can receive regular tickets for $5 a piece or $10 for club seats. Saturday is NASCAR night. Tickets to the Daytona 500 and other races will be given away at the game.
