Cubs Caravan in Northwest Indiana Raises over $15,000 for Gary Youth

Gary, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats Professional Baseball Club announced today that proceeds from the Chicago Cubs Caravan visit to Northwest Indiana last week totaled $15,121.96. That amount will be presented to the Home Field Advantage, which benefits youth baseball and softball in Gary. The Chicago Cubs Caravan visit was presented by U. S. Steel-Gary Works. The event was organized and administered by the RailCats.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella, broadcasters Bob Brenly and Len Kasper, and Cubs players Ryan Dempster, Sean Marshall, Michael Wuertz, Mark DeRosa, Matt Murton, and Donnie Veal all attended the event in Merrillville.

"United States Steel was pleased to partner with the RailCats and be the presenting sponsor for the Cubs Caravan, said Al Spajer, Department Manager-Employee Relations at U. S. Steel - Gary Works. "The overflow crowd at the Avalon demonstrated the Region's support for the Cubs, the RailCats and the kids that are positively impacted by the Home Field Advantage Foundation. The money raised by the event will be put to good use in providing baseball and softball opportunities for the youth of Gary. It was simply a great evening for a great cause."

The Home Field Advantage Foundation was started in 2002 and is a cooperative effort between

U. S. Steel, the City of Gary, and the RailCats.

"The Home Field Advantage Foundation is grateful to have been chosen as the recipient of proceeds from Cubs Caravan event," said Ed Charbonneau, President of the Home Field Advantage Foundation. "The money raised will help the Foundation in its ongoing effort to improve the baseball experience for the youth of Gary."

This season marked the first year that the RailCats have been involved with the Cubs Caravan and the team was appreciative of the opportunity.

"We would like to thank Lou Piniella and the Cubs players and broadcasters for making this a very successful event," said Janine Kurpiel, RailCats Community Relations Director and the event coordinator. "We had a huge crowd and a very entertaining program from the Cubs. We are proud to be able to do our part in this donation to the Home Field Advantage Foundation."
