Vancouver Canadians News Release
(Avista Stadium - Spokane, WA) - Canadians catcher Owen Spiwak picked up a pair of RBI while SS Vincent Capra hit his first professional home run, but it wasn't enough as the Spokane Indians topped Vancouver 4-3 on Sunday afternoon. Both teams are now 3-7 (.300) on the young Northwest League season.
Canadians starter LHP Josh Winckowski scuffled early giving up a pair of runs in the both the 2nd and 3rd innings which included RBI doubles from Indians C Francisco Ventura and Hasuan Viera which helped Spokane build a 4-2 lead. Vancouver drew to within one when Spiwak cashed in 3B Bryan Lizardo for a second time, but this proved to be the final run Vancouver or Spokane could generate on the day. Vancouver was unable get a runner past second base after the 4th inning as Spokane's suspect bullpen found its way thanks to 2 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball from RHP David Lebron and a clean 9th inning from RHP Emmanuel Clase who picked up his first save of the summer.
With the loss, Vancouver (3-7) falls four full games back of North Division leading Everett who picked up a seventh straight victory on Sunday after topping Tri-City 8-5.
The Canadians will play the rubber match of this three-game series on Monday, June 25th at 6:30pm in hopes of securing their first series of the NWL season. This game can be heard exclusively at www.canadiansbaseball.com.
The Canadians return to Scotiabank Field at Nat Bailey Stadium on Tuesday, June 26th at 7:05pm to open up an eight-game homestand vs. Tri-City (June 26-28) and Salem-Keizer (June 29 - July 3).
