Colorado Crush News Release
DENVER, Colo. - Colorado Crush head coach Mike Dailey will be coaching one of the youngest teams in his 12-year AFL career this weekend at Pepsi Center. On Wednesday the Crush signed rookie K Deric Yaussi (5-11, 197, Wyoming) and rookie DL Lauvale Sape (6-1, 297, Utah) to their active roster and placed K Clay Rush (6-3, 220, Western Missouri St.) and FB Robert Thomas (6-1, 252, Henderson State) on the injured reserve.
With the signing of Yaussi and Sape the Crush now have 11 first year rookies on their roster, and only five players with five years or more of experience. The Crush has been hampered by injury as of late.
"We are getting to the point in the season where injuries are starting to pile up," Dailey said. "We have worked out Yaussi on several occasions and he has been playing the indoor game for a while now and Lauvale is a proven worker with some NFL experience. So we feel very comfortable with where we are at."
Yaussi, a native Coloradoan from Poudre High School in Ft. Collins attended the University of Wyoming and finished his career No. 6 in UW history in scoring with 219 points. Yaussi has been kicking with the Colorado ICE of the United Indoor Football League the past two seasons and led the league last season in PAT's going 48-of-55.
Sape was recently waived by the New Orleans VooDoo of the AFL on April 14, 2008 and even got the start at nose tackle when the VooDoo played the Crush on March 30. In seven games with the VooDoo Sape recorded 7.5 total tackles and one sack. Sape was drafted in the sixth round (187th overall) in the 2003 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills.
He played in two games for the Bills as a rookie, and spent 2004 on the practice squad. In 2005 he saw action in nine games, recording eight stops and a fumble recovery. Sape also spent time with both the Oakland Raiders and Tennessee Titans of the NFL this past off-season before being waived.
The Crush and Grand Rapids Rampage are tied for second in the American Central Division and will face off at 7 p.m. Friday at Frontier Field at Pepsi Center. The Crush hold a 5-4 overall series lead over the Rampage. --30--
