
Crew opens Carolina Challenge Cup with 2-0 win over Wilmington

COLUMBUS, Ohio (Monday, March 22) - The Columbus Crew began their last leg of spring training on Saturday with a 2-0 win over the Wilmington Hammerheads in the inaugural Carolina Challenge Cup.
Crew rookie and first round (No. 2 overall) SuperDraft pick Chad Marshall scored in the 2nd minute and Frankie Hejduk tallied in the 86th minute of the win.
The Carolina Challenge Cup is a four-team round-robin tournament consisting of The Crew, D.C. United, the Wilmington Hammerheads (Division III Pro Soccer League), and the host team Charleston Battery (Division II A-League). Wilmington and Charleston both captured championships last season in their respective leagues.
The Crew will be based in Charleston from March 19-28 for training and three games before returning to Columbus for Crew Week IX, March 29-April 2, heading into the season opener.
The Crew will kick off year No. 9 of Major League Soccer on Saturday, April 3, when the Black & Gold take on the MetroStars at 7:30 p.m. at Crew Stadium.
The Crew's next game in the Challenge Cup is on Wednesday, March 24 vs. Charleston at 7:30 p.m. at Blackbaud Stadium, and then wraps up with a game against D.C. United on Saturday, March 27, at 8:15 p.m. at Blackbaud Stadium.
