Central Valley Coyotes News Release
The Central Valley Coyotes are pleased to announce that the af2 league office has assigned former Lemoore High School quarterback Clay Groefsema to them for the 2007 season.
After his career at Lemoore High School (Lemoore, CA) the 6'2 205 pound Groefsema was a three year starter for the University of Redlands. While at Redlands he was a team captain, the team's MVP, and led the team to the National Playoffs for the first time in 10 years.
"This is another good local signing for us. Clay played high school football at Lemoore High School just around the corner from the Tachi-Yokut Tribal Reservation," stated Head Coach Fred Biletnikoff Jr. "He is a great talent and another reason for the local community to get excited about the 2007 season."
As a sophomore, in his first college start, Groefsema finished 19 of 27 for 366 yards, no interceptions and 5 touchdown passes, including one for 72 yards. He finished his sophomore season with a pass efficiency rating of 148.4. In 2001, as a junior, Groefsema completed 60% of his passes for 2,015 yards, 17 touchdowns and not only threw an 85 yard touchdown pass, but also set a school record with a 99 yard touchdown pass. These statistics earned him 2nd Team All Conference Honors and led to a Pre-Season All American selection prior to 2002, his senior year. His senior year, Groefsema passed for 2,314 yards and 20 touchdowns as he led Redlands to their first playoff appearance in 10 years and finished the season with 1st Team All Conference Honors. In a playoff game against St. John's University Groefsema threw a 91 yard touchdown pass on his way to passing for 378 yards. He ended his college career finishing in the top 5 in every Single Season passing category and finished in the top 10 in every Single Game passing category in the school's history.
In 2004, Groefsema played in Germany and passed for 4,800 yards and averaged 18.3 yards per completion for the Rhein Mein Razorbacks. Three of his receivers finished with 1,000 yards receiving as he threw 51 touchdowns with only 9 interceptions. He also set a European Total Offensive Yard Record in just 13 games as he accounted for 6,604 total yards.
In 2005 and 2006 Groefsema gained two years of indoor experience playing for the River City Rage. An injury in 2006 limited him to playing in just 7 games for the season but in 22 games with the Rage he completed 327 of 532 passes (61.47%) and he passed for 3480 yards and 85 touchdowns while only throwing 12 interceptions. Also a threat with his legs, Groefsema rushed for 284 yards and scored 24 touchdowns on the ground.
