Cowlitz Black Bears News Release

Longview-Kelso: June 23, 2011: *The Black Bears won their first game after a six-game road trip with a big late inning against the Kelowna Falcons. The pitching duel featured a rematch of game one of the series between the teams in Canada, with Ian Ekery (University of Missouri) squaring off against Jared Mortenson.

The Black Bears took that game 6-5, and early on things shaped up to be another tight contest. Mortenson struck out five Cowlitz batters in a row in his first time through the order, but had problems the second and third times through. Kelowna marked a pair of single-run tallies in the second, fourth, and fifth innings, while Cowlitz pushed one across in the fourth and sixth.

The game turned in the 8th inning when the Falcons used three pitchers before retiring the Bears, but not before three runs had crossed. A leadoff triple in the frame by Billy Flamion (Oregon) got things started, and a pair of errors by Kelowna continued the rally. Kirk Cunningham (LSU) led the offense going two-for-four with a double and 2 RBI.

Newcomer Andrew Lines (UC Irvine) picked up the win while pitching 2.1 innings of relief. Ricky Villarreal (Pepperdine) picked up his second save of the season, also his second against Kelowna.

Tomorrow's game gets started with a 6:35 first pitch, but be sure to arrive early to catch the softball game between the police forces of Longview and Kelso. It will be another Las Rocas Fabulous Friday, and Ronald McDonald will pay a special visit to Story Field courtesy of McDonald's.
