Cowlitz Black Bears News Release

Longview-Kelso, Washington, Tuesday, April 24, 2012: Two Cal St Fullerton freshman pitchers, Koby Gauna and Alec Cordova, and UCLA freshman catcher Justin Hazard, will join the Cowlitz Black Bears for the 2012 season.

Gauna, 6-2, 210 lbs., is a right-hander who effectively uses his 90-91 fastball to bore in on the hands of right-handed hitters. He finishes opponents off with a terrific 77-78 mph changeup. This season with the Titans, Gauna has been one of the most frequently used pitchers on the staff, working both as a starter and a reliever. "Gauna has had an impact at Cal St. Fullerton as a freshman, which means he's special, and should help the Black Bears win games immediately", said Black Bears coach Tim Matz.

Cordova, 6-2, 185 lbs., is a left-hander from Chino (CA.) High School. In 2011, Cordova was named to the All-CIF-Southern Section Baseball Team.

Hazard, 6-2, 200 lbs, is a left-handed hitter, and can play the infield as well as catch. He was a first team All-Pacific Coast League player for Tustin (CA.) Beckman High School in 2009 and 2010. Hazard hit .403 over his three-year high school career with 89 RBIs.

"We're excited to have all three of these players on the Black Bears' roster," said Black Bears General Manager Grant Wilson. "We look forward to continuing our relationship with head coach Rick Vanderhook at Cal St Fullerton and John Savage at UCLA."
