Cowlitz Black Bears News Release
Longview-Kelso, Washington, Tuesday, November 29, 2011: The Cowlitz Black Bears announced the signing of potential 2012 first round draft pick Clint Coulter. In addition to the signing of Coulter, the Black Bears have signed returning pitchers Kody Watts and Ian Ekery.
Coulter, a senior at Union High School in Camas Washington, is currently considered one of the nation's top prospects in his class. BaseballNorthwest.com has him ranked as the No. 4 player in the state. He is projected by many to be the first High School catcher to be taken in the 2012 MLB draft. Coulter has committed to playing at powerhouse Arizona State.
"It's a salute to our community and our fans that so many great players want to play for the Black Bears," said team general manager Grant Wilson. "Whether Clint signs to play professionally or decides to honor his commitment to the Sun Devils, we're excited to have him as a member of the Black Bears."
Kody Watts and Ian Ekery are the only two players returning from the 2011 season. Watts, a freshman at University of Portland, pitched in only one game last year, pitching 5 innings while striking out 3 and giving up no runs. Ekery, a sophomore at Central Arizona College was one of the best all around pitchers for the Black Bears in 2011. He went 4-3 with and 2.85 ERA with 31 strikeouts in 47.1 innings pitched. "We're excited to have these two pitchers returning," added first year head coach Tim Matz. "I believe our fans will be impressed with the level of talent we're putting together for the 2012 season."
