Canton Cougars News Release

CANTON, OH - The Ultimate Indoor Football League (UIFL) is pleased to announce the weekly awards for the week ending April 17, 2011.

Canton's Ray Marrow earns the Conquest Cards Player of the Week nod after nearly leading the Cougars to their second win of the season. Only a missed extra point kept Canton from taking the game into overtime. He was 24-of-45 passing for 271 yards and eight touchdowns. The eight scoring strikes are one off the UIFL's single-game record. Marrow is the second Canton player to earn the league's offensive award, joining Ryan Brinson - who earned the honor for the week ending March 22.

For the fourth time this season, a member of the Northern Kentucky defense is the Terry's Tire Town Defensive Player of the Week. Following his six-tackle, two-interception performance, defensive back Brett Hamblen picked up the laurel. Both picks came in the end zone and kept Eastern Kentucky off the board. River Monsters players Santino Turnbow (4/4), Thomas McKenzie (3/22) and Kenneth Joshen (2/28) have all claimed the league's defensive award this season.

In a week that featured two kickoff returns for touchdowns and a game-winning field goal, the Edge Sportswear Special Teams Player of the Week goes to Saginaw's Andrew Beaver. His 50-yard return with 18 seconds remaining in the second quarter helped keep Canton at bay. The Cougars had just scored their second touchdown in 45 seconds to get to within one score, when Beaver took the ensuing kickoff to the house. Beaver joins Chris Kolias (3/29) as the other Saginaw player to earn the special teams pick.

Week ten of the UIFL season features a battle for first place as Saginaw (6-2) travels to Northern Kentucky (7-1) Saturday. A Sting victory would pull the teams into a tie for first place and potentially keep the River Monsters from securing the league's first berth in the playoffs. In other games, Eastern Kentucky (4-4) travels to Johnstown (2-6) on Friday, while Canton (1-7) hosts Huntington (4-4) on Saturday.
