California Cougars News Release
Stockton, CA - Oct. 29, 2007 - The California Cougars, of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL), announce third year forward Enrique Tovar as the MISL Offensive Player of the Week after a three goal performance in the Cougars' 11-10 loss to the Chicago Storm on Saturday October 27, 2007.
Tovar accounted for three of the five total goals scored by the Cougars in their first game of the season. Two of Tovar's three goals equaled the score, 4-4 with less than five minutes remaining in the first half, and 8-8 with less than three minutes remaining in the third quarter. "Qeek's" first goal came in the second quarter and put the Cougars on the scoreboard for the first time this season. Tovar's third goal came on a penalty kick. After one game played, the 28 year-old Tovar is tied at the top of the league in points with six, and leads the MISL with three two-point goals.
"It's an honor" said Tovar. "But I would gladly trade it for a win. We let that game slip by; we won't let that happen again."
Tovar led the Cougars in the 2006-07 season with 63 points on 26 total goals. His 63 points were the 10th highest total in the MISL. He also finished the season with 10 assists and eight blocks.
"Tovar picked up right where he left off for us last year," said head coach Bernie Lilavois. "The experience he has gained playing in the league the past two seasons along with being part of our US National Futsal Team this past summer has elevated his game. We look for him to be a consistent scorer for us this season."
Joining Tovar on the list is goalkeeper Tony Meola of the New Jersey Ironmen and Baltimore Blast defender P.J. Wakefield.
Meola returned to indoor soccer for the first time since he played with the Buffalo Blizzard in the 1994-95 season. The US National Team veteran played the entire game in goal this past weekend for New Jersey, recording ten saves in a 7-4 win over the expansion Orlando Sharks. The Kearny, NJ native surrendered two goals (four points) and withstood a flurry of Orlando shots in the final two minutes to preserve the first-ever win for the expansion Ironmen.
Blast team captain P.J. Wakefield led the Blast's defensive effort Saturday night in the team's 13-8 win over the Milwaukee Wave. The 27-year-old defender recorded four blocks in the game and helped hold the Wave to four goals. Wakefield anchored a Blast defense that held the Wave scoreless for the first 35:57 of the game and the final 4:54 of the game when Baltimore scored three late goals to win the match. Wakefield leads the MISL with five blocks this season.
The Cougars play their second game of the season on November 10, 2007 against the expansion La Raza de Monterrey. Tickets can be purchased by calling (209) 373-1550 or by visiting stocktontickets.com.
