
Cougars Fall to Sockers in Opener, 10-6

The California Cougars fourth quarter comeback fell short as they drop their home opener to the San Diego Sockers 10-6.
It was all Sockers the first three quarters. The Sockers led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter.
They were up 4-0 in the second when Craig Scheer scored the first Cougar goal with 59 seconds left in the half to give some life to the Cougars. Fifty-eight seconds into the second half Uriel Robledo scored to bring the Cougars within two goals.
The Sockers then rolled off five unanswered goals and ended the third period with a 9-2 lead.
Robledo started a fourth quarter charge with a goal twenty-two seconds into the fourth quarter.
The Cougars scored the next three in a row with goals by Chris Handsor, Clemente Fonseca, and Scheer to bring the score to 9-6 with 9:07 remaining in the game.
The Cougars momemtum was slowed by a 6th foul blue card with 8:19 left in the fourth, then a blue card tripping with 6:19 in the fourth, that killed the comeback run.
California then put in the 6th attacker replacing Jesus Molina with Nelson Santana 3:24 remaining in the game. The Cougars were unable to capitalize on the sixth attacker and San Diego scored a final goal of the game against Santana.
Former Cougars Aaron Susi and Majell Aterado made their presence felt for the Sockers. Susi finished with 2 goals and an assist, while Aterado had a goal. The Cougars scoring was led by Robledo with 2 goals and an assist and Scheer who had 2 goals.
