GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars (39-31) extended their season-best winning streak to eight games Thursday night, rallying past the Cleburne Railroaders (35-37) 5-4 at Northwestern Medicine Field to complete a three-game series sweep.
The victory also marked Kane County's ninth win in its last 10 games, with timely hitting and another strong bullpen effort sealing the club's longest winning streak of the season.
The Cougars wasted little time building an early lead. Armond Upshaw walked to open the first before Josh Allen reached on an error. Matt Bottcher followed with an RBI double to left-center, and Todd Lott crushed a towering three-run homer completely out of the stadium in left field, giving Kane County a 4-0 advantage. It was Lott's second home run in as many games and his sixth of the season.
Cleburne chipped away over the next three innings. Mason Minzey opened the scoring for the Railroaders with a solo home run in the second, and RBI hits from Cody Thomas and Caleb McNeely cut the deficit to one in the third before Carter Aldrete's RBI single tied the game at 4-4 in the fourth.
After the Cougars stranded runners at third in consecutive innings, they reclaimed the lead in the sixth. Charles Mack singled before newcomer Cooper Weiss continued his hot start in Kane County, driving a double off the left-center field wall to score Sam Dexter and put the Cougars back in front, 5-4. Weiss has now driven in runs in back-to-back games.
The bullpen made the lead stand. Zach Veen (4-1) earned the win with 1.1 scoreless innings, Casey Crosby escaped a leadoff double in the eighth, and Logan Nissen struck out the final batter of the game to earn his second save despite bringing the tying run aboard in the ninth.
Braydon Nelson (1-2) took the loss for Cleburne after allowing the go-ahead run in the sixth.
With the sweep, the Cougars pushed their winning streak to eight games and continued their surge through the second half while completing another impressive homestand.
The Cougars will begin a new series with the Gary Southshore Railcats at the Steel Yard tomorrow, August 7th for a three-game set. They will return to Northwestern Medicine Field Tuesday, August 11th for a 3-game series with the Lincoln Saltdogs. For more information, visit kccougars.com or call 630-232-8811.
