Cottonmouths Claim Victory over 'Hawks, 4-1

Columbus,GA--The RiverHawks were unable to take advantage of powerplay opportunities Tuesday night in Columbus, as the Cottonmouths skated away with the 4-1 victory.

Mark Thorburn had two goals to lead Columbus to victory. Thorburn found the back of the net 17:06 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Columbus and again while on the power play 7:10 into the third to make the score 4-1 Columbus.

The Cottonmouths excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in four chances. By firing 28 shots on goal, Columbus exceeded the 22.6 shots it averages per game this year.

Columbus also got a goal from Alex MacLeod as well. In addition, Columbus received assists fromBret Tyler, who had three and Sam Bowles and Tom Fitzpatrick, who each chipped in one.

Augusta put 29 shots on net during the contest, more than the 19.2 it averages per game. Penalties took their toll on the RiverHawks, as their penalty kill unit let in two power play goals.

Augusta was led by Shawn Skelly, who scored the team's only goal. Skelly scored 10:07 into the second period to make the score 1-1. Alex Morton provided the assist.

The Cottonmouths ended with 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major. Austin Lee recorded 24 saves for the RiverHawks. Augusta ended with 11 minutes in penalty time with three minors and one major.

The RiverHawks will be on the road until February 16. Their next contest is coming up on January 18 as the Team travels to Knoxville to face the Ice Bears. Fans can watch the road games live at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta.
