LUBBOCK COTTON KINGS 2001-02 WEEKLY RELEASE FINAL 2001-2002 SEASON RELEASE

THE FAT LADY HAS SUNG

The Cotton Kings season has come to an end, and the Cotton Kings just missed the playoffs, posting a final record of 30-23-11. The ‘Kings finished the season sitting in third place of the Southwest Division and fifth place in the Southern Conference (top four conference teams make playoffs). Lubbock's 71 standing points would have qualified them for the third seed in the Northern Conference playoffs, but as mentioned earlier, the Cotton Kings are in the Southern Conference. It is the first time in franchise history Lubbock has failed to make it to the postseason, and only the second time Bill McDonald has not coached a team to the playoffs in his eleven years of coaching at the professional level. The sore spot for the ‘Kings, during the season, was injuries and shootouts. Lubbock only played 3 games with a full healthy roster, and the ‘Kings 11 overtime losses ranked as the second most in the CHL season. Nine of the overtime losses were shootout losses, which led the CHL.

‘KING OF THE WEEK

Neil Savary has been named as the final Cotton Kings player of the week, for his efforts on March 11 – 17th. The third year ‘King produced a 1.67 GAA with a 2-1-0 record in three games. He only allowed 5 goals in 3 games, stopping 90 of 95 shots in the combined three games. Savary wrapped up a career high season, finishing ranked 8th in CHL goaltending, with a 2.84 GAA.
