Cosmo Dupaul Traded to Corpus Christi
October 17, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Lubbock Cotton Kings News Release
LUBBOCK, TX: October 17, 2002 â The Lubbock Cotton Kings and the Corpus Christi Ice Rays of the Central Hockey League have reached a trade agreement, as the Cotton Kings send veteran forward Cosmo Dupaul to the Ice Rays for the rights of defenseman Mike Dawson and a future consideration. The Cotton Kings will also place Mike Dawson to their negotiation list.
"This was a difficult decision to make," said Cotton Kings head coach/director of hockey operations, Bill McDonald. "Dupaul was wanting to explore getting closer to San Antonio, where his girlfriend lives, and this works out well for him. These things happen in minor league hockey, and we made the decision to do what was best for Dupaul instead of what is best for the team. We lose one of the most valuable players in the league, but hopefully the other end of the deal will pan out to lead us into a successful direction."
Dupaul, a native of Pointe-Claire, Quebec, has spent the past two seasons of his career in Lubbock combining for 46 goals and 92 assists for 138 points in 125 games. The two-time all-star with Lubbock is the Cotton Kings all-time leader in assists (92) and ranks second on the team's all-time point list with 138 points. Dupaul led the Cotton Kings last season in assists (46), plus/minus (+26), and home scoring with 7 goals and 28 assists for 35 points in 32 games.
Dawson, who will be placed on the negotiation list, is a 5'11" 185-pound native Sault Sainte Marie, Ontario. The 29-year-old defenseman is in his third professional season after playing the past two seasons in the Netherlands. He turned professional during the 00/01 season with the Heerenveen Flyers, where he tallied 9 goals and 9 assists for 18 points in 17 games. Last season, Dawson joined the Amsterdam Tigers and recorded 5 goals and 14 assists for 19 points in combined Dutch Cup and league play spanning 36 total games. He played major juniors in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with Kingston, where he played alongside Cotton Kings forward Derek Gauthier's brother Sean, and Newmarket. Dawson also played Canadian college hockey at Acadia University (Wolfville, NS) and St. Mary's University (Halifax, NS), playing alongside Cotton Kings defenseman James Sheehan.
