Cory Sears Joins Steeldogs Training Camp Roster, Four Released

BIRMINGHAM, AL - Birmingham Steeldogs Head Coach Bobby Humphrey has announced that the Steeldogs have been assigned former Troy State linebacker Cory Sears.

Sears led the Trojans in tackles during the 2001 season with 111, including nine for loss. The 6'0", 205-pound linebacker originally signed with Southern Mississippi before transferring to Troy State. Sears appeared in 32 games with the Trojans accumulating 136 tackles, three sacks, two fumble recoveries and two blocked kicks. Sears played his prep ball for Lee High School in Montgomery and had 473 career tackles, the highest total ever for a player in 6A.

"Cory will be a great addition to our team. We have a lot of depth on the offensive side of the ball whereas Cory will step in and have an immediate impact on our defense," said Steeldogs Head Coach Bobby Humphrey.

The Steeldogs begin their final week of training camp preparations this evening at Lawson Field. The Steeldogs have until Monday, March 31st to trim the roster to 21. Currently, four players have been released from camp: Kenric Fairchild, Mississippi State; Robby Daniel, University of North Alabama; Dexter Wells, Tuskegee; and James Orrick, UAB.

The following is the practice itinerary for the remainder of the week:

Monday, March 24th- Lawson Field 6-8 p.m.
Tuesday, March 25th- BJCC Arena 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, March 26th- BJCC Arena 6-8 p.m.
Thursday, March 27th- BJCC Arena 6-8 p.m.
Friday, March 29th- BJCC Arena 6-8 p.m.

The Steeldogs will open the 2003 season Friday, April 4th when the expansion Cincinnati Swarm make their first ever trip to the BJCC. Season tickets for the 2003 season are on sale now. For more information, contact the Steeldogs Ticket Offices at 458-8833.
