Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Laredo, TX - The Corpus Christi Rayz and Laredo Bucks played an even, back and forth game for 50 of 60 minutes on Sunday afternoon at the Laredo Entertainment Center. Then the Bucks broke out for four goals in the final ten minutes to beat the Rayz 6-2. Chris Grenville led the way with his second hat trick in as many games as the Rayz lost in regulation against the Bucks for just the second time in the last six meetings. The Rayz and Bucks return to the American Bank Center for the final time on Saturday, March 25th when they host the Laredo Bucks on the 2nd Annual "Pack the House For Charity" Night. For more information, please call the Rayz at (361) 814-PUCK.
The Rayz and Bucks traded two goals a side in the opening 20 minutes of play. Randy Murphy wasted no time getting the Rayz on the board for an early 1-0 lead. At 3:14 of the opening period, Murphy ripped a slapshot from the top of the slot that beat Dov Grumet-Morris high stick side. The Bucks answered with a pair of goals from Chris Grenville to take their first lead of the game. Grenville teed up a slapshot of his own from the left circle at 5:49 to tie the game. He then snapped a shot through Reid at 11:01 to give the Bucks their first lead of the game. The Rayz answered at 14:52 when Derrick McIver took as pass from Chris Robertson at the top of the crease and redirected it past Grumet-Morris. McIver's team-leading 23rd goal tied the game at two and capped the scoring for the opening frame. The Bucks outshot the Rayz 14-10 in the first period.
Neither team scored in the second period, however a back and forth frame saw several chances at both ends. The Rayz came close to recapturing the lead on different occasions. In the first minute of the period, Josh Miskovich hit the left post for the Rayz. Later in the frame, fellow rookie, Tim Vitek hit the right post breaking into the Bucks zone. The Rayz also had a chance shorthanded when Ryan Carter had a breakaway late in the period, but was stopped trying to go short side against Grumet-Morris. The Rayz outshot the Bucks 12-11 in the second period.
In the third period the Bucks got four goals to propel them to victory. Jeff Bes broke the 2-2 tied with a power play goal on a rebound at 10:12. Ladislav Kouba then converted a two on one with Brett Cullaton to make the score 4-2 at 15:02. Kouba got his second of the night on an empty net goal at 17:49, and Grenville completed his hat trick in the final minute at 19:41 to complete the four-goal flurry.
The Rayz loss dropped their record to 22-34-5. Reid took the loss, making 34 saves on 39 shots. His record fell to 15-17-3. The Bucks win improved their conference-leading record to 41-14-6. Grumet-Morris made 26 saves on 28 shots and got the win to vault his record to 17-5-2. The Bucks outshot the Rayz 40-28. The Rayz went 0-4 on the power play. The Bucks went 1-2. With the win, the Bucks scored their fifth straight victory. The Rayz had their two-game winning streak in Laredo snapped.
The Corpus Christi Rayz are thrilled to present the second annual "Pack the House for Charity" Night at the American Bank Center on Saturday, March 25th at 7:35pm in the final home game of the Rayz season. In conjunction with Fan Appreciation Night, the Rayz will host their biggest rivals, the Laredo Bucks while showing their appreciation to the fans and South Texas Community. The Rayz will attempt to "pack the American Bank Center" with fans and help raise money for three very deserving youth based organizations in Corpus Christi. The Rayz have joined forces with the Boys and Girls Club of Corpus Christi, the Nueces Child Welfare Foundation and the Corpus Christi Youth Hockey Association for the charity event. The Rayz will provide a cash grant and a portion of ticket sales to each of these groups.
