Charlotte Knights News Release
FORT MILL, S.C. - May 18, 2009 - Charlotte Knights pitcher Jose Contreras threw for a one hit game in a 4-0 win over Toledo to continue their three-game winning streak.
With Contreras throwing a nearly perfect game, all Charlotte needed to do was put runs on the board. Offensively the team was led by second baseman Keith Ginter who went 3-3 with a double. A home run blast in the 6th by Brian Myrow helped the cause as the Knights went on to win in a very short one hour and fifty-nine minute game.
Still, the story of the game was Contreras who pitched a complete game shutout. He allowed just the one hit and had 5 strikeouts with 3 walks. Contreras pitches, most notable his nasty forkball, darted all over the strike zone fooling Mud Hens hitters. Contreras was aware of the no-hitter and wanted to get it.
A pair of plays by Ginter and great groundball pickup and throw from third baseman Javier Castillo helped keep the no-hitter alive. Ginter's diving groundball stop towards second base in the top of the 8th kept the no-no going. Toledo's Danny Worth broke it up in the next at-bat with a double down the left field line.
"After Ginter made that great play in the 8th inning I really wanted it," said Contreras interpreted through teammate Kelvin Jimenez. "I've never been that close to a no-hitter before."
Knights manager Chris Chambliss was very happy with his team's performance. Most of all he was impressed with Contreras' performance.
"Jose was outstanding. He was using all of his pitches and they all were strikes. He used different angles and had great control. It was impressive," said Chambliss.
The Knights and Mud Hens conclude their series Tuesday at 7:15 PM. RHP Eddie Bonine (0-0, 1.88 ERA), is scheduled to start for Toledo. The Knights will start RHP Carlos Torres (3-2, 1.85 ERA).
