Cincinnati Commandos News Release

CINCINNATI - Most coaches tell you that the biggest improvement can be found between the first and second games. For two teams that had different outcomes in their season openers, Friday's game marks visual proof how much improvement was made. (02EKYNotes)

Cincinnati left its 49-28 victory over Johnstown pleased with the win, but with the realization that they left a lot of plays on the gridiron. Its first game in the double motion offense left the notion that the Commandos offense has the potential to be the most explosive offense in Cincinnati's brief history. Despite going scoring scoreless in the third quarter and coming up empty on three red zone trips, the Commandos were still able to post 49 points.

In addition, receiver Brandon Boehm - who was named UIFL North Offensive Player of the Week - broke two receiving records. His nine-catch, 119-yard performance broke records established in the Commandos' first season.

"We focused a lot on the little things," said head coach Billy Back. "My play calling, we had missed assignments, ran the wrong routes, just mental mistakes. Our big play guys need to step up once again."

Eastern Kentucky's defense, led by UIFL performer David Jones and defensive lineman Ellery Moore, have hopes of slowing down the Cincinnati attack. Jones recorded a team-high eight tackles in the Drillers' loss to Marion.

The Drillers struggled in the middle quarters, yielding 44 of the 54 points in the second and third quarters.

"David Jones is a true leader of their defense," said Back. "They had a couple breakdowns and gave up some big play, but I am sure they will get that fixed."

Offensively, EKY showed big play ability in the Marion game as quarterback Allan Holland connected with Aric Evans for four touchdowns. Evans finished the game with 11 catches for 209 yards and four touchdowns.

"They have a veteran quarterback, a leader, he controls their team," said Back. "We have to put pressure on him, and not give him time to throw to Evans. He is their big play guy, and we respect their deep play ability."

Playing at the Eastern Kentucky Exposition Center, where the Drillers were unbeaten last season, poses a different element as last season it was the smallest field in the league. However, it was been said that the playing surface will be expanded in 2012.

One thing is for sure, a streak is coming to an end on Friday. The Commandos have won 14 straight games, while EKY has won eight straight contests at home.
