Houston Comets News Release
HOUSTON - The fifth annual Clutch City Foundation Comets Charity Luncheon will be held on May 18 at the Hyatt Regency Houston located downtown at 1200 Louisiana Street. The Comets Charity Luncheon is the primary charity event of the Houston Comets and raises funds for various non-profit organizations in the Houston area.
This year's event will honor Comets player Dawn Staley who is entering her final season as a WNBA player. Staley created the Dawn Staley Foundation to "create a future of hope for at-risk youth by providing opportunities that help them realize their dreams and become productive and responsible citizens."
Proceeds from this year's event will benefit Girls Inc., a national research, education, and direct advocacy non-profit organization that inspires girls to be strong, smart, and bold.
"We at Girls Incorporated of Greater Houston are thrilled to team up with the Houston Comets for this joyous occasion," said Sandy Fitzgerald, Executive Director/CEO of Girls Inc. "It's wonderful to have the Comets as role models because girls everywhere can look up to them and know that they can aspire to be whatever their heart desires. I believe that this is a perfect marriage between Girls Inc. and the Comets, and one that can continue to grow for years to come."
In 2004, Girls Inc. reached nearly 800,000 girls through Girls Inc. affiliates, their website, and educational publications.
With local roots dating to 1864 and national status since 1945, Girls Inc. has responded to the changing needs of girls through research-based programs and public education efforts that empower girls to understand, value, and assert their rights.
Andrea Young, Comets President & CEO, is excited about the upcoming Charity Luncheon and its beneficiary, Girls Inc. "I am excited to be able to kick-off our 10th Anniversary Season with such a meaningful event that will help a wonderful organization like Girls Incorporated of Greater Houston further their mission to inspire girls in our community to be strong, smart and bold. Girls Inc. has a tremendous reputation for aiding young girls in their development and we feel that the Houston Comets are in a unique position to help advance this great cause."
In ten years, the Clutch City Foundation has donated more than $6 million to benefit Houston charities. The Clutch City Foundation was established in 1995 by Rockets owner Leslie Alexander to provide help, hope and inspiration to those in Houston who might otherwise be forgotten.
