
Comets return to action after bye week

After a two-week layoff for the NWFA's traditional Mother's Day weekend off and their bye week, the Columbus Comets will host the expansion Tidewater Floods this Saturday at Whitehall-Yearling High School to complete the first half of the 2005 season. The Comets are currently tied for 6th place in the NWFA Northern Conference, but with a game in hand on two of the top five teams in the conference and holding the tiebreaker over Baltimore (currently 5th) by virtue of their 22-20 win over the Burn on April 23. The top six teams in each conference qualify for the playoffs.

Floodwaters
Tidewater have a very difficult schedule for their inaugural season, playing home-and-away with Eastern powers Baltimore Burn, DC Divas and Philadelphia Phoenix in addition to playing Pittsburgh Passion and Columbus. It's been a tough go for the Floods so far, having been outscored 136-8 against Baltimore, DC and Philadelphia in their first three games...QB Rowena Allen has the Floods' only TD, scored in their inaugural game against Baltimore. TB Candice Williams added a two-point convert to complete the Floods' scoring so far this year...LB Kim Barnes played basketball at traditional women's hoop power Old Dominion University. She also played lacrosse & field hockey for the Monarchs and now coaches field hockey at Lake Taylor H.S. in Norfolk...DL Lynn Glover is a computer repair technician in the Navy.
Comet Tails
On April 30, the Comets set a franchise record with two defensive touchdowns in a game on interception returns by Angie Barney and Robyn Gatson. It was the first career TD for both...WR / K Lindsey Eckles is 3rd in the NWFA in punting, averaging 33.1 yards per kick. She also has the league's second-longest punt this year (50 yards @ Baltimore 4/23)...QB Crystal Davis' four TD passes against Indiana was one short of her career best (5 @ Wisconsin 5/15/2004). She also improved to 13-38 passing (34.2%) for 172 yards...Four Comets are averaging at least 12 yards per reception-Lindsey Eckles (17.4), Megan Dunton (17.0), Whitney Barnes (16.0) and Emily Haynam (12.0)...Columbus' rushing attack continues to get better as well despite losing Cynthia Freeman to injury. The Comets have had back-to-back games with over 200 rushing yards and are now averaging 171.7 yards per game on the ground...
