Kansas City Comets News Release
KANSAS CITY - The Kansas City Comets have renewed their oldest rivalry, adding a mid-season exhibition Feb. 9, 3 p.m. against the Wichita Wings at Hartman Arena in Park City, Kan. The Wings, currently competing in the MASL2, traveled to Kansas City last month for a preseason clash at the Kansas City Soccer Dome. The Comets won 10-2.
"The Wichita Wings are among the most storied franchises in our sport," said Kansas City managing partner Brian Budzinski. "The Comets look forward to playing in front of great Wichita fans during the Wings' 40th season."
"Wings versus Comets is one of the best rivalries in indoor soccer history," added Wings GM Blake Shumaker. "This is an exciting opportunity for both the players and the fans to experience it firsthand."
The last time the Comets traveled southwest down I-35 to play the Wings in Wichita was Jan. 12, 2013, a 12-11 win for the Wings. These storied franchises have a shared history.
Indoor Soccer Hall of Famer and 17-time all-star Kim Roentved booted up for both the Comets and the Wings as a player before also coaching both franchises. United States Women's National Team coach Vlatko Andonovski played for both franchises before coaching the Comets to the 2014 MISL title. Steven Hamersky is currently playing goalkeeper for both the Comets in the MASL and the Wings in the MASL2.
The Comets have back-to-back road games at the Dallas Sidekicks and expansion Mesquite Outlaws before returning home to face Danny Waltman and the Tacoma Stars Dec. 28.
