INDEPENDENCE, MO - It took the St. Louis Ambush (1-8) twelve games but they were able to beat the Missouri Comets (9-2) for the first time in history. Coach Tony Glavin's team recorded their first victory of the season with a 6-5 win in front of 3,376 fans at the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena.
Missouri rallied back from a three-goal deficit late in the second quarter but fell short in their attempts to equalize and send the contest to overtime. Defender John Sosa led the Comets with two points off of one goal (restart) and one assist.
Coach Vlatko Andonovski's team will have a short break as they return to action the day after tomorrow when they visit the Cedar Rapids Rampage at the U.S. Cellular Center before returning home on Saturday to host the Milwaukee Wave.
With a hat trick, newcomer Andre Hayne led the Ambush, while goalkeeper Piotr Sliwa kept the Ambush with a lead throughout the four quarters with a total of 20 outstanding saves.
Once again this season, the first quarter only saw one goal, which came at the 5:01 mark via Hayne assisted by Daniel Berko. Despite multiple shots on target, Missouri was unable to get on board. Two more goals from the visitors and the Comets' first scored by reigning MVP Leo Gibson assisted by Kiel Williams ended the half with a 3-1 score in favor of St. Louis.
Following the halftime break, both teams came out stronger and combined for a total of five tallies. The Comets tied it at three with goals from Bryan Perez and John Sosa. However, the Ambush retook the lead with three consecutive goals by Hayne, Gordy Gurson and Elvir Kafedzic to end the quarter 6-3.
Late goals by Rodriguez and Kevin Ten Eyck were not enough for the Comets to drop their second match of the season.
