December 27, 2011 - Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL)
Kansas City Comets News Release
(Independence, MO) The Missouri Comets and Wichita Wings have a long rivaled history together. That rivalry was renewed this season beginning with an overtime battle on the league's opening night. As the next step in that rivalry, the Comets and Wings have announced the establishment of the I-35 Series. The winner of this season series each year will be awarded the Turnpike Trophy sponsored by Independence Tourism and Park City. The trophy will have the winning team's name placed on the trophy each year and will reside with the winning team all season.
"Having the Wings back in the league has been one of the best parts of the season so far. One of the things that made the original MISL great was the rivalry between our two teams," says Comets president Brian Budzinski, "This trophy gives our fans even more reason to follow the rivalry all season long.
Wichita Wings General Manager John Blazek is equally excited about the vision of the Turnpike Trophy, "The Wings and Comets are one of the best storied rivalries in Indoor Soccer history. Our teams look to commemorate that rivalry in the I-35 series this season, and for many seasons to come" The Comets and Wings play each other six times in the 2011-2012 season, and the Comets currently lead the series 2-0. The teams play a home-and-home series this week, Wednesday in Independence, MO then Friday in Park City, KS. The Turnpike Trophy, sponsored by Independence Tourism and the city of Park City will be on display at each game between the Comets and the Wings this season. This season's series wraps up on January 14th at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO."
