Comets Acquire Dawn Staley from Sting

HOUSTON - The Houston Comets today acquired guard Dawn Staley from the Charlotte Sting along with Charlotte's 2006 second-round draft choice in exchange for Houston forwards Adrienne Goodson and Kristen Rasmussen, as well as Houston's 2006 first-round draft pick.

Staley (5-6, Virginia ‘92) had started all 219 games of her WNBA career with the Sting. Playing in her seventh season, Staley holds career averages of 8.9 points and 5.4 assists. The four-time WNBA All-Star currently ranks third in the WNBA in assists per game this season (5.3) and is second in the league in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.9). Staley originally joined the WNBA after a successful stint in the ABL, being selected by Charlotte in the first round (9th overall) of the 1999 WNBA Draft.

In addition to her play in the WNBA, Staley is a three-time Olympic gold-medal winner (1996, 2000, 2004) with the U.S. Women's Basketball Team. Staley was also elected as the U.S. Delegation's flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the 2004 Summer Games and was named USA Basketball's 2004 Female Athlete of the Year.

As a collegian, Staley was named national player of the year in 1991 and 1992. During her four years at Virginia, she appeared in four NCAA Tournaments, three Final Fours and one NCAA Championship Game.

Staley also serves as head coach for the women's basketball team at Temple. She guided the Owls to one NIT appearance (2000-01) and three NCAA Tournament berths (2001-02, 2003-04, 2004-05). Staley was also named the A-10 Coach of the Year in both 2004 and 2005.
