Colorado Misery Continues in Fresno
Fresno, CA - Fresno seized control over the final two periods and kept Colorado winless in its last eight games with a 4-2 victory Wednesday night in front of 6,073 at Selland Arena.
Mike Mathers opened the scoring for Fresno with a one-timer, assisted by Kris Porter, at 4:36 of the first period. Greg Schmidt buried Colorado's first goal in six periods with a wrist shot top shelf on a power play at 9:44 to tie the game at 1-1 after the opening 20 minutes.
The Falcons opened up a 3-1 lead early in the second frame as Joe Frederick and Derek Cormier scored at 2:03 and 4:25, respectively. The Gold Kings wasted three power play opportunities in the period, including back-to-back cracks at a two-man advantage. But Colorado netminder Mark Gowan kept his team in the game, making point-blank stops on Cormier and Jason Weaver and turning away a penalty shot by Brad Both.
Fresno finally put the game away at 3:58 of the final period, when Gowan turned the puck over in his own zone and Mathers fired into the vacated net for a commanding 4-1 edge. Zac Boyer accounted for the final margin with a meaningless tally off a loose puck in front at 19:41. Colorado, in the midst of its worst slump (0-7-1) since the 1998-99 season, drops to 35-26-7 overall while Fresno moves back to the .500 mark (29-29-8) for the first time since October 28th.
After seven straight games on the road, the Gold Kings return home for Friday and Saturday night games against the Falcons at the Colorado Springs World Arena at 7:05 p.m. Friday's game marks the return of "Five-Dollar Friday," where any ticket may be purchased in the upper bowl for only five bucks. Saturday is "Date Night" at the World Arena, when couples receive two lower bowl tickets, two hot dogs, and two sodas for only $25. Jack Michaels calls the play-by-play for Colorado's games, all of which are broadcast live on KKCS-AM Hot Talk 1460.
