Colorado Loses in Overtime in Calgary
DENVER - For the sixth consecutive time at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, the Mammoth and Roughnecks played a one-goal game. Saturday night's affair was the third straight that went to overtime. Finally, the Roughnecks found a way to win in the extra frame, scoring just 21 seconds in to stop Colorado's two-game winning streak.
"[Curtis] Dickson beat us to the net, and you can't leave him in front of the net; it's as simple as that," said Mammoth head coach Bob Hamley.
Dickson, who entered the action fifth in the NLL with 27 goals, managed just one through the first 57 minutes of the game. He scored twice in 30 seconds to give Calgary an 11-10 lead with 1:55 remaining, its first since the first quarter.
After Mammoth forward Sean Pollock completed his hat trick with an extra attacker on the floor with 38 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 11, Dickson scored on the Roughnecks' first possession in overtime.
The teams combined to score 10 power-plays goal, with neither successfully killing off a penalty until the fourth quarter.
"We had a power-play late and we didn't [score]," said Hamley. "Maybe if we finish on that power-play, it's a different story."
Colorado led, 7-3, at the half, but the Roughnecks outscored the Mammoth, 4-2, in both the third and the fourth.
Jordan McBride, who came in having scored 11 goals in the past four games, paced Colorado with seven points (2g, 5a). John Grant Jr. finished with six points, with all three of his goals coming in the second quarter. Goaltender Tye Belanger suffered his first loss as a starter despite stopping 39 shots.
NLL points leader Shawn Evans had a 10-point night, including an assist on Dickson's game-winner. He factored into the last five goals for the Roughnecks, scoring once and notching four helpers.
