Colorado Breaks Out In Sweep
Colorado Springs, CO - In a game that featured a combined 18 power plays and 176 penalty minutes, Xavier Majic and Cody Bowtell each scored a pair of goals to push the Gold Kings to a 6-1 win over the Fresno Falcons before a crowd of 4,268 at the Colorado Springs World Arena.
The Gold Kings scored two goals on their first two shots in the opening period. Zac Boyer scored the first goal on a wrister from the left point that beat Fresno goaltender David Mitchell at the 6:53 mark. The second came on a power play with Bowtell's backhander from the top of the crease, his first goal in a Colorado uniform. Majic scored following a Ryan Tocher drop pass to increase the edge 3-0 with 1:25 left in the first period.
Mitchell was replaced after the first period by Terry Friesen after making only eight saves on 11 shots. Fresno took advantage of one of its seven power plays as a Kris Porter slap shot from the right circle whizzed past Colorado goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck stick side at the 3:59 mark of the second period. However, Majic poked in his second goal of the night on a rebound of a Craig Lyons slapper from the point to give him four goals in the series and pad the lead to 4-1 heading into the final frame.
The penalty-killing unit put the game away for Colorado as R.J. Enga one-timed a Mike Garrow pass past Friesen at the 3:03 mark, giving the Gold Kings their 15th shorthanded tally of the year. Bowtell banged home a rebound between the legs of Friesen for his second goal of the night and a final margin of 6-1.
Colorado wraps up its regular season with a two-game series at the World Arena against the Anchorage Aces Friday, April 5th and Sunday, April 7th where the puck is scheduled to drop at 7:30 p.m. MST both nights. Jack Michaels calls the play-by-play for Colorado's games, all of which are broadcast live on KKCS-AM Hot Talk 1460.
