NEW YORK, Dec. 15, 2008 - James Mays of the Colorado 14ers was today named the NBA D-League Performer of the Week for games played during the week of Dec. 8, 2008. He is the first rookie to earn Performer of the Week honors this season.
Mays led Colorado to a 2-1 record this week while averaging 25.7 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists. Mays' week was highlighted by a 37-point performance in a win over Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday. His 37 points ties Tulsa's Ronald Dupree and Joe Crawford of Los Angeles for most points scored in a game this season.
The 6-9 Mays was Colorado's first-round pick (second overall) in the 2008 NBA D-League Draft after playing in training camp with the Denver Nuggets.
After five games he is ranked second in the NBA D-League with 24.2 points per game and checks in at 11th in the league with 9.6 rebounds. He has led the 14ers to a 5-1 start securing Colorado the top spot in the Southwest Division.
Other top performers last week included Rio Grande Valley's Stanley Asumnu, who posted 20.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.0 steals while connecting on 30-of-43 (.698) from the field; Erie's Erik Daniels, who averaged 21.0 points and 6.7 rebounds, leading the BayHawks to a 3-0 week; Jermareo Davidson, who averaged 19.0 points and 12.0 rebounds while shooting 63 percent (22-of-35) from the floor for Idaho in three Stampede wins; Tulsa's Ronald Dupree, who averaged 22.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists in three games for the 66ers; and Austin's Marcus Williams, who averaged 18.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 6.0 assists in three consecutive wins for the Toros last week.
The NBA Development League, founded in 2001, is the NBA's official minor league and features 16 teams with direct affiliations to NBA teams.
The league has produced 15 percent of the players on 2007-08 end-of-season NBA rosters and continues to develop current NBA coaches and referees.
In fostering the league's connection to the community, its teams, players and staff promote youth basketball, support local needs and interests,and assist in educational development through NBA D-League Cares programs.
