Cody Ayers About to Set Danbury Whalers All-Time Points Mark

February 7, 2014 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL)
Danbury Whalers News Release

It's been a remarkable 2-year run for Danbury Whalers forward Cody Ayers. Last season he was a key contributor in the team's run to the Commissioner's Cup and this year has been one of Danbury's best players. Ayers is third in the FHL in points and has helped lead the Whalers to the best record in the league.

All the success for Ayers has led him to be on the verge of setting the Whalers all time record for points, a record Ayers takes great pride in.

"It means quite a bit to me personally," said Ayers. "It's always nice to have a record in an organization like this one. It's extremely special to me but I have to give credit to my teammates and especially Ryan Patch, who helped me get a lot of points this year and I couldn't do it without them."

Ayers, who has 103 points in his Whalers career, has tied the record of former Whaler Alec Kirschner. Ayers' career in Danbury began in the 2012-2013 season where he had 57 points in 50 games played. For Ayers, the success is something he's always dream about.

"I always thought I could play at this level, but never did I think I would be an all-time leading scorer for a franchise, to think about that, it's pretty cool."

Ayers, a native of Colorado, had a lot of success in college prior to impressing Whalers coach Phil Esposito. Ayers has been a staple for the Whalers the last two seasons. Ayers' legacy will not only be remembered for his contributions on the ice but off the ice as well, and for Ayers' that is perfectly okay.

"A good person on the ice is more important off. It means a lot to me to sign autographs for all the fans who come out and support us in every game. It's another reason to work hard, you want to be successful for them."

The Whalers play a two game home stand this weekend beginning with a game against the Watertown Privateers on Saturday and that's where Ayers' will likely go into sole possession of the points record. Ayers is most grateful for the support of his family who have helped him throughout his hockey career.

"I wouldn't be here right now without the support of my parents. They're the ones who put out the time and money to help me be successful. Even more than that they've believed in me in every decision I've made and that means more than anything."
