Cobras To Honor High School Athletes

August 21, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Carolina Cobras News Release

CHARLOTTE The Carolina Cobras of the Arena Football League, in partnership with News 14 Carolina, The Charlotte Observer and Charlotte.com, will recognize one student-athlete each week during the 2003 high school football season with the Cobras Ironman Award.

The award provides local coaches and athletic directors the opportunity to reward those players that display the ability to play both offense and defense. These skills are reflective of the players in the AFL, where the majority of the athletes are two-way performers.

Athletes will be nominated for the award by their respective schools based on their performance. Weekly winners are recognized with a plaque presentation at their school featuring News 14 Carolina sports director Mike Solarte and Cobras wide receiver/defensive back Jamaal Garman. The presentation will be featured on Sports Night on News 14 Carolina each Wednesday, as well as in the Friday edition of The Charlotte Observer.

"This award is another example of our commitment to giving back to the Charlotte community," said Cobras General Manager Darrell Harbin. "The Ironman Award will recognize those rare athletes that play on both sides of the ball."

At the conclusion of the 2003 high school football campaign, one player will be honored with the Cobras Ironman of the Year Award. Also, following the season, the weekly award winners will be recognized for their performance at halftime of a Cobras regular season home game on the field at the Charlotte Coliseum.

The Cobras will begin their fifth season in the Arena Football League when the 2004 campaign kicks off the weekend of February 6-8. Season tickets are on sale now and start as low as $64 per seat. For more information, call 877-4-COBRAS or visit www.cobrasfootball.com.
