CHARLOTTE Â The Carolina Cobras announced today that they have signed WR/DB Alvin Ashley and FB/LB Michael Blair in preparation for Sunday afternoon's game against the Chicago Rush at the Charlotte Coliseum.
In his 10th AFL season, Ashley is one of only three players in league history to record over 7,000 receiving yards and 7,000 combined kick return yards. He entered the 2003 campaign ranked 4th in AFL career kickoff returns (355), 4th in combined kick returns (403), 5th in kickoff return yards (6,170), 5th in combined kick return yards (6,954), 6th in all-purpose yards (14,315), 6th in MFG returns (49), 7th in receptions (586), 7th in receiving touchdowns (136), 8th in receiving yards (7,104), 8th in MFG return yards (796) and 10th in scoring (880).
In 10 games with Tampa Bay this year, Ashley had 12 receptions for 124 yards and two touchdowns, 13 kickoff returns for 257 yards and recorded 12.0 tackles on defense. He was released by the Storm on April 23.
Blair is in his second stint with the Cobras this season. He had 14 carries for 74 yards and five receptions for 55 yards in five games earlier this year for Carolina before being waived on April 8. His 29-yard carry on February 28 at Grand Rapids was the second longest run in team history. Blair is in his second AFL season after spending the 2002 campaign with Grand Rapids.
Kickoff for Sunday's game against Chicago is set for 3:00 p.m. at the Charlotte Coliseum.
