Carolina Cobras News Release

CHARLOTTE The Carolina Cobras of the Arena Football League, in partnership with News 14 Carolina, The Charlotte Observer and Charlotte.com, announced Rod Council of West Charlotte High School has been awarded this week¹s Cobras Ironman Award.

The senior wide receiver/defensive back receives the honor following his strong all-around performance in leading the Lions to a 46-8 victory over Myers Park on September 5. In the contest, Council recorded 10 tackles and two interceptions on defense, while also posting a 22-yard touchdown run.

A preseason All-America defensive back, Council has played a large role in leading West Charlotte to an early 3-0 mark, their best start since 1999. The Lions next square off with E.E. Waddell High on Friday, September 12.

The Cobras Ironman Award provides local coaches and athletic directors the opportunity to reward those players that display the ability to play both offense and defense. These skills are reflective of the players in the AFL, where the majority of the athletes are two-way performers.

Athletes are nominated for the award by their respective schools based on their weekly performance. Winners are recognized with a plaque presentation at their school featuring News 14 Carolina sports director Mike Solarte and Cobras wide receiver/defensive back Jamaal Garman. The presentation is featured on Sports Night on News 14 Carolina each Wednesday, as well as in the Friday edition of The Charlotte Observer.

The Cobras will begin their fifth season in the Arena Football League when the 2004 campaign kicks off the weekend of February 6-8. Season tickets are on sale now and start as low as $64 per seat. For more information, call 877-4-COBRAS or visit www.cobrasfootball.com.
