THE GAME

The Carolina Cobras will look to continue their success on the road this Saturday, May 25, 7:30 p.m. versus the Tampa Bay Storm at the Ice Palace. The Cobras (3-2), who had their franchise-best three-game winning streak snapped last week versus Grand Rapids, will look to win their third straight on the road this weekend. Carolina is 2-0 away from the ESA in 2002. The Cobras will also be looking for their first-ever sweep on a Southern Division opponent. Carolina knocked off the Storm, 46-36, three weeks ago in Raleigh. Tampa Bay (1-4) is off to one of their worst starts in club history after falling 38-24 to the Los Angeles Avengers last week. The Storm opened the 2000 season 1-4 before winning 7 of their last 9 games to finish 9-7. Tampa Bay is 1-2 at home in the Ice Palace in 2002.

THE STAKES

Although the Cobras fell to the Rampage last week, they maintained their two-game lead in the Southern Division with losses by Tampa Bay, Orlando and Georgia. The Cobras can take a huge step forward in the division race with a win over the Storm on Saturday. Orlando (1-4) is at Indiana (3-2) and Georgia (1-4) hosts Los Angeles (3-2).

WHAT'S NEXT

The Cobras continue their two-game road swing through Florida with a visit to Orlando next Friday, May 31, 7:30 p.m. Carolina returns home on Friday, June 7, 7:30 p.m. to take on the Arizona Rattlers at the ESA.

COBRAS LAST WEEK ...Grand Rapids 64, at Carolina 45
RALEIGH, N.C. (Ticker) -- STEVE SMITH caught a career-high five TDs and CLINT DOLEZEL threw for six TDs to lead the Grand Rapids Rampage past the Carolina Cobras, 64-45. Smith, who set career-highs in receptions and receiving yards last week, caught 11 passes for 134 yards for Grand Rapids (3-2). The 28-year-old Utah State product hauled in three TD passes in a 27-point, second quarter and added two TDs in the fourth. His five TDs matches a franchise record. Dolezel completed 21-of-34 passes for 252 yards. CURTIS CEASER opened the scoring with a 25-yard TD reception for the Rampage, who won their second straight after dropping two in a row. AARON BAILEY had nine catches for 153 yards and two TDs for the Cobras (3-2). CONNELL MAYNOR, who had gone 3-0 after taking over the starting job for AARON SPARROW in Week One, completed 14 passes for 184 yards and three scores in the Carolina loss, snapping a three-game winning streak. Carolina FB/LB ANDRE BOWDEN broke a three-year AFL record when he ran for a 49-yard TD in the third quarter. Orlando Predators TOMMY DORSEY had a 45-yard run against Albany on May 28, 1999.

ABOUT THE COBRAS (3-2)

Carolina has battled through injuries to their top two receivers (Aaron Bailey and Carl Bond) to build a two-game lead in the National Conference Southern Division. QB Connell Maynor has guided the Cobras to a 3-1 record after replacing injured starter Aaron Sparrow in the second half of a season-opening loss versus Dallas. Maynor has been efficient, completing 61 of 110 passes for 769 yards with 13 TDs and an INT. Bond, who missed the Grand Rapids game last week with an ankle injury, leads the team with 19 catches for 223 yards and four touchdowns.

RALEIGH, N.C. (May 4, 2002)-Carolina defensive specialist Clarence Lawson intercepted Tampa Bay's Scott Milanovich with 20 seconds left in the game to secure a 46-36 victory Saturday night in front of 9,314 at the ESA. The Cobras appeared to have the game won when they recovered an onside kick after the Storm's Lawrence Samuels hauled in a 20-yard touchdown to pull the visitors within three. But, on the first play after the kickoff, Connell Maynor fumbled the snap from center Justin Cleveland to give the Storm life. COBRAS NEWS & NOTES...

ROAD WARRIORS... Historically, the Cobras have struggled on the road (3-11 coming into 2002), but in 2002, they have felt more comfortable away from the ESA. Carolina is 2-0 on the road in 2002 with victories at Georgia and at New Jersey. The Cobras are 5-11 (.312) all-time on the road.

DIVISIONAL DILEMMA... The Southern Division has historically been one of the strongest in the Arena Football League with at least one representative from the division playing in the ArenaBowl in four straight and 6 of the last 7 champion games (including four ArenaBowl winners). This season the Southern Division is a combined 6-14, with the Cobras holding the division's only winning record at 3-2.

SNAKE BITES... Cobras' offensive specialist Aaron Bailey (tailbone) returned to action last week versus Grand Rapids after missing two straight games with an injured tailbone. Bailey looked in mid-season form, catching 8 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns in the first half alone. But, the Rampage defense adjusted in the second half and limited Bailey to just one catch for 7 yards. WR/DB Carl Bond missed last week's game with an ankle injury. He was a game-time decision and was a late scratch. His status for this week's game at Tampa Bay is questionable. QB Aaron Sparrow (sternum/shoulder) hasn't played since leaving the season-opener late in the third quarter vs. Dallas. Sparrow has progressed over the last couple of weeks, but his status is still day-to-day.

RUMBLING, BUMBLING, STUMBLING... The Cobras have been the AFL's most effective team on the ground through five games in 2002. Carolina leads the league in rushing offense (34.4 ypg.) and has rushed 42 times for 173 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Cobras have out-rushed the opposition in every game this season except one (at Georgia, out-rushed 38-36). Carolina set a number of team marks in last week's loss vs. Grand Rapids, including most rushing yards in a game (78). On the flip side, the Cobras also surrendered 64 yards on the ground (second most in club history) and the two teams combined to rush for a Cobras team record 142 yards.

BOWDEN BREAKS RECORD... Carolina FB/LB Andre Bowden inked his name in the Arena Football League record books last week with a 49-yard touchdown run (on a 50-yard field). Bowden's length of the field scamper added to his totals of 58 yards (on four carries) and two touchdowns.

RED ZONE EFFICIENCY... Although the Cobras are ranked 13th out of 16 teams in scoring offense (46.0 ppg.), they have been one of the most effective teams in the AFL inside the "red zone" (10-yard line). Carolina has had only 19 opportunities inside the 10-yard line but has scored on 18 of those possessions (94.7 percent), including 15 touchdowns. The San Jose SaberCats are the best red zone team in the AFL, connecting on 25 of 26 possessions (with 24 TDs).

SACK ATTACK... Last year Carolina made huge strides along the offensive/defensive line, finishing fourth (out of 19 teams) in the league with 20 sacks. The Cobras also tied for the league lead in sacks allowed (9). Through five games so far in 2002, the Cobras have already yielded 10 sacks. During their inaugural campaign in 2000, the Cobras finished 15th (out of 17 teams) allowing 28 sacks in 14 games. Defensively, Carolina has been getting pressure on opposing quarterbacks in 2002, but just has not been able to register sacks. The Cobras have 3.0 sacks in five games in 2002 (all three by FB/LB Andre Bowden and FB/LB Marrio Grier).

CALL IT IN THE AIR... Did you know the Cobras have won the pre-game coin toss in all five games in 2002? Dating back to last season where Carolina won the toss in 12 of 14 regular season games, the Cobras have won the toss the last 17 of 19 times (.894).

DEFER TO DEFENSE... Carolina has been playing into their strength so far in 2002, beginning with the opening coin toss. The Cobras have won the toss all five times and have selected to defer their choice to the second half and play defense first in every game this season. Last season the Cobras started on defense first in 13 of their 14 regular season games.

AWARDS... Each week during the season, there are a number of awards that are given out to players who exemplify outstanding play. This season there are three awards: Built Ford Tough Award, Game MVP and Game Ironman. The Built Ford Tough Award is a national recognition award given after every game to the player or players (up to 5) on each team best demonstrating determination and toughness in that game. The award honors the players who made a game-saving tackle or score-saving tackle, threw a key block on the big play or exhibited physical sacrifice or consistent tough blocking and tackling on both sides of the ball. The honored players receive a helmet sticker that recognizes the Built Ford Tough Player of the Game.

MATCH-UPS TO WATCH (Quick Hitters)...

Which offense will be able to score?...The Cobras and Storm head into Saturday's match-up in search of some life on offense. Carolina is ranked 14th in the league in scoring offense (46.0) while the Storm comes in at 15th (43.4 ppg.) in the league. Tampa has been able to move the ball (7th overall in total offense with 283.4 ypg.) but has sputtered in the red zone. The Cobras are still looking for a spark on offense (ranked last in the AFL with 202.8 ypg.)

Cobras Rush Offense vs. Tampa Bay Rush Defense...This ought to be an interesting match-up as the Cobras feature the league's best 1-2 punch at FB/LB with Andre Bowden and Marrio Grier. Bowden is third in the league in rushing (14 for 75 yards, 5 TDs) while Grier is ranked 6th overall (15 carries for 58 yards and 5 TDs). The Storm rush defense is second best in the league, yield just 10.6 yards per game.
