Cobras Announce More Roster Moves

February 6, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Carolina Cobras News Release

CHARLOTTE The Carolina Cobras made several more roster moves this morning in preparation for this Sunday's game at Buffalo. The team signed OL/DL Desmond Byrd and DS Derek Stingley, placed QB Chad DeGrenier and WR/LB Tim Dumas on injured reserve, waived DS Richard Holland and signed QB Glen Gauntt to the practice squad.

Byrd returns to the Cobras, for whom he played last season. A four-year AFL veteran, he signed with Tampa Bay during the offseason but was released by the Storm at the conclusion of training camp. He played his first three seasons with the Florida Bobcats before joining the Cobras in 2002.

Stingley is a six-year veteran who was named to the All-AFL First Team in 1999 when he led the league in passes defended and finished second in tackles. He helped lead the Albany Firebirds to the ArenaBowl Championship that season. Stingley played four seasons in Albany and is still the Albany/Indiana Firebirds franchise leader in career tackles and career passes defended and ranks second in career interceptions. He played for the Chicago Rush in 2001 and with the Arizona Rattlers last year.

The Cobras reinstated DeGrenier to injured reserve on February 5 with a hip pointer. Dumas was placed on injured reserve with a right hamstring strain. Gauntt joins the Cobras practice squad from the af2 Augusta Stallions, where he played for head coach Mike Hold the last two seasons. In 2002, he completed 306-of-591 passes for 3,787 yards and 82 touchdowns in 16 games.

The Cobras return to the field on Sunday, February 9 at Buffalo. Carolina's home opener is slated for Friday, February 14 (Valentine's Day) versus the Detroit Fury.

Tickets for all eight home games played at the Charlotte Coliseum can be purchased at the Charlotte Coliseum box office, at all Ticketmaster outlets, online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at 704-522-6500.
