Stockton Lightning News Release

STOCKTON, Calif. * The Stockton Lightning of the arenafootball2 league have been re-assigned DS Clyde Surrell by the af2 league office, Lightning head coach Doug Murray announced today.

"Clyde was a key piece to last year's success that I wanted back on this next year's team," said Murray. "I feel that his familiarity with our system, athleticism and team-first attitude are core ingredients needed for our team that looks to improve leaps and bounds this off-season."

In just 10 games during his af2 rookie season, the 24-year old Surrell led the Lightning with three interceptions, ranked eighth in the league with 78 interception return yards, ranked second on the team with 52.5 tackles and ranked second on the team with 10 pass break-ups.

Perhaps his most impressive feat of the season, however, was etching his name in the Lightning historical lore with one touchdown return for the season, accomplished in Stockton's 68-62 overtime win at Green Bay on June 10, also dubbed the "Touchdown In Titletown." Surrell recovered an onside kick from Lightning kicker Marc Hickok and advanced the return 44-yards downfield for the game-winning score.

Surrell has garnered professional experience as a member of the New Orleans Saints (NFL) training camp squad in 2003. Surrell's collegiate experience stems from four years as a member of the Colorado Buffaloes (NCAA) under head coach Gary Barnett, appearing in 41 games between the 2000-03 campaigns.

Born in Stockton, Surrell appeared in a career-high 13 games as a 2001 sophomore, helping guide the Buffaloes to a 10-3 record, 2001 Big-12 Championship and a 2002 Fiesta Bowl appearance. He started nine of 12 games as a 2002 junior, posting a career-high 71 tackles, including a single-game career-high (2002 team-high) 17 take-downs against Texas Tech, also posting the only interception of the game on acclaimed Red Raiders quarterback Kliff Kingsbury.

The Lightning finished their inaugural 2006 arenafootball2 season with a 5-11 record, finishing fourth in the National Conference's West Division and recently hired Doug Murray as the second Head Coach in team history.

In their first season, the Lightning ranked third in af2 attendance with an average of 7,445 fans per home game. Season tickets for the 2007 Lightning regular season are on sale now.
