ADELANTO, Calif. - Rio Ruiz slugged a three-run homer in the eighth inning to put the JetHawks up a run but the bullpen was unable to hold the lead in an 11-10 loss to the High Desert Mavericks at Heritage Field on Monday night.
The JetHawks rallied from three down in the eighth inning to take a one-run lead against Andrew Kittredge. Jordan Scott led off with a double and scored on a Teoscar Hernandez double. Carlos Correa followed with a single to set up Ruiz's first Cal League home run.
In the bottom of the eighth J.D. Osborne entered from the bullpen and walked the first two batters he faced on eight pitches. Rodney Linares brought Jamaine Cotton in from the bullpen and he walked the first batter he faced on four pitches.
With the bases loaded and no outs, J.D. Peterson grounded into a 6-4-3 double play allowing the tying run to score. Cotton later uncorked a wild pitch to allow the winning run to score.
Carlos Correa struck out swinging with two on and two out in the ninth to end the game and give Will Mathis his first save. Kittredge (1-0) picked up the victory and Osborne (0-1) was hit with the loss.
Ruiz finished the night 4-for-5 with two doubles, the home run and five RBIs. Hernandez also had a big night going 3-for-5 with two doubles, four RBIs and a walk.
Mark Appel started his third game for the JetHawks and allowed three runs on five hits over three innings with four strikeouts and no walks. The right-hander allowed a two-run homer to Gabriel Guerrero in the second inning for the game's first runs.
The JetHawks (8-4) take on the Mavericks (9-3) in the second game of the series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. in Adelanto. Kyle Westwood and Cal League Pitcher of the Week Vince Velasquez will pitch for Lancaster against Tyler Pike.
