Harrisburg, PA â The Harrisburg City Islanders have announced the signing of midfielder Pete Shellenberger, a native of Lancaster and product of Manheim Township High School. Shellenberger is also a 2000 graduate of Penn State University.
The 25-year-old enjoyed a standout career at Manheim Township before graduating in 1997, earning All-State and Lancaster-Lebanon League MVP honors following his senior year. Shellenberger went on to become a four-year starter and letter winner and two-time All-Big Ten selection (1997, 2000) at Penn State. In 1999, he served with current City Islander Derek Potteiger as team captain for the Nittany Lions.
He began his professional career in 2001 with the A-League's Hershey Wildcats, and spent the 2003 season with the Reading Rage, now of the PDL. Shellenberger was also drafted in 2000 by the MISL's Harrisburg Heat.
The signing of Shellenberger, who participated in this past weekend's open tryouts at Harrisburg High School, gives the Islanders five players under contract for their inaugural season. He joins forward David Bascome and midfielders Mike Feniger, Mike Henning, and Potteiger.
The Harrisburg City Islanders will open training camp on Monday, March 15, and kick off their inaugural season in the Pro Soccer League (PSL), a division of the United Soccer Leagues (USL), on Saturday, April 17, with a road game against Northern Virginia. The Islanders will also travel to Charlotte on Friday, April 30, and Wilmington on Saturday, May 1, before playing their first home game at the Skyline Sports Complex against the cross-state rival Pittsburgh Riverhounds on Saturday, May 8.
The club will also play six preseason exhibition games against several of the region's top college soccer programs beginning on Saturday, March 20, at Elizabethtown College with games against Elizabethtown and Villanova.
